Annie VoPainting + DrawingSimpsonville, SC
I have been drawing since middle school, and it all started with a ballpoint pen. I highly recommend it for beginners who are not used to sketching lightly. The permanent pen will help force you to really focus on breaking down the figures into shapes. Eventually, I branch out to other media especially to conquer the fear of colors. My current favorite media is watercolor because they're the least messy when I'm at home. It's the hardest to control, but I actually like it that way because it forces me to be more loose and embrace the media.
Looking back, what advice would you give yourself?
My advice is to ask for help when things are tough. You have no idea how stubborn I used to be because I kept thinking that being an adult means doing things yourself. There are some points where you do have to do it yourself, but not all the time.
What's your favorite A+D memory?
I love interacting with the professors. They were so helpful throughout my time in Anderson.
What was your favorite A+D class?
My favorite class has to be Drawing 1 mainly because object studying is relaxing.
What moment, project, and/or critique in your Art + Design career at AU has been pivotal to who you are as an artist or creator?
When I was struggling on Graphic Design, I have to meet with Professor Marks about it. He notice that I do better on Painting 1 and recommend changing my major to Painting and Drawing.
What's next for you?
I was thinking of finding a stable job with a consistent schedule so I can focus on art.
How do you hope your work makes an impact?
I'm hoping that I can create an illustrative graphical novel that people would like to read.
